Marine Affairs

Why ÐÂÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ

I chose ÐÂÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ for Marine Affairs because if you're going for anything that's marine based, [ÐÂÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ] is a really great location. Marine Affairs is a relatively small major. Because of that, we have one professor that deals with all of the Marine Affairs classes, so you really get to have a good connection with them. ÐÂÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ is a big family, in the School of Marine and Environmental Programs, everybody knows everybody so you’re always going to have friends in your classes.

Hands-on Learning

My internship was with General Dynamics at Bath Iron Works. I did environmental health and safety (EHS). Within EHS, there's the environmental department, safety department, the laboratory, and industrial hygiene. They really got me involved with every department. There’s a policy aspect [to the work] that is a lot of what we’re [learning] in class. For example, I went to the main facility in Bath and all of the Brunswick facilities and ensured they have all of the spill prevention materials that they need in case a spill were to occur. We’re making sure we comply with the EPA and DEP laws. I'm thankful for the opportunity from ÐÂÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ to provide an internship course throughout the summer. Internships are all about finding what you really want to do. I think [everything I learned] is all transferable to whatever I'm going to be doing in the future. I made a lot of connections throughout the internship, which is probably the most important thing.
