Philosophy Professor David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., wrote a blog, titled 鈥淗ate! Hate! Hate!鈥 that was posted on the Philosophy Talk website on September 1.
In the blog, Smith addresses the widespread talk in the media about fighting against hate, an idea that, he claims, 鈥渄oesn鈥檛 make any sense鈥 if taken literally. Even if interpreted metaphorically, he says, the concept is not sound.
鈥淟ove and hate aren鈥檛 good or bad all on their own,鈥 he explains. 鈥淭heir goodness or badness, rightness or wrongness, depends on what it is that鈥檚 being loved or hated. It鈥檚 good to hate injustice, or cruelty, or indifference to the suffering of others, and it鈥檚 bad to love these things. So there are good hates and there are bad loves.鈥
Smith argues that calling groups, such as the neo-Nazi protesters in Charlottesville, 鈥渉ate groups,鈥 is not entirely accurate. 鈥淓ven the Nazis 鈥 the original German ones 鈥 didn鈥檛 conform to the FBI definition of hate group,鈥 he states. He quotes historian Claudia Koonz from her book The Nazi Conscience to point out that German Nazism was not packaged as hateful but, rather, as loving of 鈥渙ld-fashioned values of honor and dignity.鈥
