Pharmacy students Seema Patel and Lindsey Tatakis were interviewed by WMTW for a segment on Drug Takeback Day and prescriber requirements.

In Maine, new laws limit the prescription of opioids. The limit for acute pain prescriptions, such as medications taken after surgery, is no more than 100 milligrams per day for a maximum of seven days. Prescriptions for chronic pain, like back pain, are limited to a 30-day supply.

Patel and Tatakis, who are Drug Takeback Day volunteers, discussed the importance of having resources available for individuals to dispose of unneeded medications. 鈥淭hese are very strong and effective drugs that are meant for one diagnosis or medical condition,鈥 said Patel. 鈥淚t鈥檚 important that people return them and we can reclaim these medications when they鈥檙e not in need any more.鈥
