David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., professor of philosophy, recently wrote a blog that was published by the Philosophy Talk website. Titled 鈥淭he Unnatural is the Political,鈥 the blog argues that one sense of the unnatural carries great political potency.

Writes Smith, 鈥溾 the concept of the natural gets used to justify the social order, and the concept of the unnatural fuels efforts to punish or destroy those who deviate from it.鈥 He poses the example of the claim that it is unnatural for women to prefer high-powered careers over motherhood. 鈥淲hen people say such things, they鈥檙e not claiming that women can鈥檛 pursue such careers. Instead they鈥檙e saying that there鈥檚 something deviant or wrong鈥攕omething contrary to female nature 鈥 something unnatural about it,鈥 writes Smith. He points to miscegenation and homosexuality as other concepts that historically have undermined socially entrenched conceptions of the natural order.

Smith warns that 鈥渢arring people with the brush of unnaturalness can have very serious, in fact deadly, consequences.鈥 He further cautions that there exists 鈥渁n even more sinister conception of the unnatural.鈥 Smith explains: In any system of categories there are things 鈥 in this case people 鈥 who don鈥檛 wholly fit into any of the boxes. It鈥檚 not that they鈥檙e out of place, it鈥檚 that they don鈥檛 even have a place. Such people implicitly call the whole system 鈥 the whole conception of a society 鈥 into question鈥 They pose what the philosopher Noel Carroll calls a cognitive threat鈥  and will be 鈥渕arked for destruction or shunted off to the margins of society 鈥 in the past, exile, and in the present, prison.鈥
