David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., professor of philosophy, participated in a "Scholar鈥檚 Circle" radio show interview on July 9, titled 鈥淭ruth about Lies We Speak and Hear.鈥
Smith and two other scholars discussed the idea that we are living in a 鈥減ost-truth鈥 era as the result of the election of President Donald Trump and his accusations of 鈥渇alse news.鈥
Smith pointed out that deception in politics is nothing new and that successful politicians have always been skilled at manipulating the public鈥檚 perception of them. However, he shared his view that Trump鈥檚 skill is highly developed. 鈥淭rump has the salesman鈥檚 instinct for [image manipulation],鈥 he explained. 鈥淣ot that political lying is something new... That鈥檚 ridiculous鈥hat鈥檚 different is that he can push the envelope very far, indeed, if he tells people the sorts of things that motivate them in the way he wants to motivate them.鈥
