Jon Ryder, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the College of Dental Medicine, spoke with MPBN, the Bangor Daily News, the Journal Tribune, and WMTW about a new report from the Associated Press regarding flossing. After looking at research conducted over the past decade, the AP found that there was not strong scientific evidence to support flossing.

Despite the recent finding, dentists and health professionals emphasize the need for thorough cleaning that extends beyond brushing. Ryder said flossing is an important tool in reducing plaque buildup, which contributes to tooth decay and periodontal disease.

鈥淢ost people actually have missing or tilted or crooked teeth, and we need to have these (flossing) instruments at our disposal to help prevent further disease and reduce the amount of plaque on the teeth,鈥 Ryder said.
