According to the article, the infant mortality rate in Maine has been increasing since the 1990s, with the state ranking 37th in the country. 鈥淚f I were given the choice of only one piece of data to measure the health of a society, it would be infant mortality, since it is an indicator of the health of three populations that are very vulnerable 鈥 infants, pregnant women and postpartum women 鈥 all of whom need the support of their society for optimal outcomes,鈥 Mills said.
