鈥楾ikkun Daily' publishes article by Anouar Majid on Muslims鈥 reactions to ISIS atrocities

On August 11, 2014, the Tikkun Daily published an article by Anouar Majid, Ph.D., vice president for Global Affairs and the director of the Center for Global Humanities.  The article, 鈥淕enocide in Iraq,鈥 was published despite the fact that, according to the editor鈥檚 note, the Tikkun Daily was not entirely in agreement with Majid.

In the article, Majid discusses the recent atrocities committed by the Islamic state in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and argues that people of all faiths must not be silent when 鈥渨anton violations of human dignity鈥 occur in the world 鈥渋n the name of some God-given purity.鈥

Majid specifically calls on moderate Muslims to no longer be complacent about the murder and genocide by ISIS extremists, arguing that they must make their dissenting voices heard.  He states that in order for this to happen, 鈥淚slam, with its vast corpus and many contradictions, must be reinterpreted in order to provide meaning to people living in the here-and-now.  Most importantly, well-meaning Muslims need to have a new approach to their faith if they want, in the words of the American Declaration of Independence, to appeal to a 鈥榙ecent respect for the opinions of mankind.鈥欌
